Academic Assessment

Undergraduate students at Missouri S&T are required to participate in appropriate assessment and survey activities.  This requirement originates from a directive at the Governor's Office, the legislature of the State of Missouri, the Board of Curators' guidelines and the university policy.  Compliance is important to Missouri S&T students, programs, and the entire institution.  Specifically, students must cooperate in the following manner* (see Survey and Exam Tracker), which is subject to change:

    1.    Students who have completed between 45-75 credit hours are scheduled to take a general education test such as the Measure of Academic Proficiency & Progress (MAPP) test, before registering for further course work.

    2.    Seniors are scheduled to take a major field test, such as the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the Major Field Tests (MFT), before being approved for graduation.

    3.    Freshmen are scheduled to complete the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) survey prior to their first day on campus.

    4.    Freshmen and seniors are scheduled to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

    5.    All students are scheduled to complete the Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) survey.

Academic assessment involves the systematic process of gathering and using data for evaluating and improving programs and services.  The student outcomes assessment flowchart summarizes the relationships among assessment instruments, targeted students, assessment outcomes,  and the university's mission, goals and objectives.
